The Origins of Ramen: A Historical Perspective

 

The story of ramen is a fascinating journey that traces its roots back to China, where wheat noodles were first introduced. The initial concept of noodles made from wheat flour and water traveled to Japan in the late 19th century, embedding itself within the Japanese culinary landscape. The earliest known reference to ramen dates back to the Meiji period (1868-1912), a time when Japan looked outward to embrace new cultures and ideas, including culinary practices.

During this period, Chinese immigrants began to establish noodle shops, serving dishes that resembled what we now recognize as ramen. These early iterations were simple, featuring broth, noodles, and minimal toppings. However, as Japan moved into the 20th century, the ramen dish began to adapt, reflecting regional tastes and preferences. Notably, the Japanese began to incorporate their own flavors and ingredients, which led to the emergence of different ramen styles across the various regions of Japan. For instance, Sapporo in Hokkaido became known for its rich miso ramen, while Hakata is famous for its tonkotsu (pork bone) ramen.

The cultural backdrop of Japan post-World War II also played a pivotal role in the popularization of ramen. The need for affordable and filling meals led to a surge in the consumption of this dish among a population struggling to rebuild. Ramen quickly transitioned from being a mere import to a symbol of resilience and comfort food in Japan. The subsequent rise of instant ramen in the 1950s, pioneered by Momofuku Ando, marked a significant shift, making ramen accessible worldwide and solidifying its status as a global culinary phenomenon.

Today, ramen represents much more than just a meal; it has evolved into an emblem of cultural exchange and culinary artistry, celebrated both in Japan and beyond.

Pemerintah Provinsi Kepulauan Bangka Belitung menerima Apresiasi Warisan Budaya Indonesia 2024 dari Menteri Kebudayaan Republik Indonesia Fadli Zon, sebagai bentuk apresiasi kepada pemerintah daerah dalam menjaga dan melestarikan budaya tradisional masyarakat.

 

"Presiden Prabowo Subianto menginginkan kebudayaan Indonesia dapat lebih dikembangkan, dimanfaatkan dan dibina dalam rangka mewujudkan masyarakat yang berdaulat secara politik, berdikari secara ekonomi dan berkepribadian dalam kebudayaan," kata Menteri Kebudayaan Fadli Zon dalam keterangan pers diterima LKBN ANTARA Babel di Pangkalpinang, Minggu.

 

Ia mengatakan Undang-Undang tentang Pemajuan Kebudayaan merupakan upaya lain yang dilakukan oleh pemerintah, untuk menjadi fondasi dalam mengembangkan nilai-nilai luhur budaya, keberagaman budaya, memperteguh jati diri bangsa serta memperkokoh persatuan dan kesatuan.

 

"Kegiatan apresiasi Warisan Budaya Indonesia ini juga merupakan penghargaan pemerintah bagi pemangku kepentingan, komunitas dan masyarakat yang telah melestarikan warisan budaya tak benda dan cagar budaya," katanya.

Penjabat Gubernur Kepulauan Bangka Belitung Sugito mengucapkan terima kasih kepada Kementerian Kebudayaan atas hadirnya Undang-undang Kebudayaan Nasional, sehingga budaya yang ada tak hanya dilestarikan, tapi juga ada kemanfaatan dalam perkembangan bagi masyarakat.

 

"Apresiasi ini menjadi motivasi bagi kita semua untuk mengupayakan kebudayaan yang lain dalam kancah nasional atau internasional," katanya.

 

Ia menyatakan di dalam Undang-Undang Nomor 5 Tahun 2017 tentang Pemajuan Kebudayaan memiliki beberapa tujuan, di antaranya melindungi kekayaan intelektual budaya, meningkatkan kesadaran masyarakat untuk melindungi, mengembangkan, memanfaatkan dan membina keragaman budaya.

 

Selain itu juga menempatkan kebudayaan sebagai haluan pembangunan nasional, serta memberdayakan pembangunan dengan menghadirkan sikap dan perspektif yang mengutamakan keselarasan antara manusia dan lingkungannya.

 

"Budaya ini tidak hanya dilindungi dan dilestarikan, tapi bisa dikapitalisasi sebagai motor penggerak ekonomi masyarakat. Hal ini menunjukkan kekayaan masyarakat Kepulauan Bangka Belitung," ujarnya.
